One of the symbols of Nový Jičin is a square-shaped, white chateau decorated with small, slender towers. The chateau, whose silhouette has become one of the symbols of the city, is called Žerotínský and is part of the historic city center.
The two-star Žerotín chateau will capture the interest of every visitor to our town. Originally, this was a stone edifice built around 1380 by Vok VI. of Kravaře. It stopped serving as a nobility residence in the 16th century, when the municipality purchased it from the house of Žerotín and took over the chateau management.
The chateau interior and exterior changed radically in the second half of the 19th century, as the facade attic was partially demolished above the circumferential fortification. At the floor level, the original, mostly barrel vault arches, some with sectors, have been partially preserved. One of the halls on the first floor boasts a preserved decorated Renaissance beamed ceiling.
Today, the chateau premises are home to the Muzeum Novojičínska
, whose expositions offer an overview of the development of local hat manufacturing and the town history. Regular museum exhibits also regularly take place in the halls of the chateau.
