Be enchanted by the art of music performed by one of the three best symphony orchestras in the Czech Republic, active since 1954. The orchestra, currently counting about 100 members, is recognizable thanks to the full sound of its string section, its musical interpretation and technical prowess.
The Janáček Philharmonics of Ostrava (JFO) annually organizes over 50 diverse symphony concerts for its audience, attempting to offer the widest repertoire possible, including Czech and world premieres and starring the best artists.

Its concert set list includes not only traditional symphony series, but also narrated concerts of film soundtracks, shows intended for families with children, chamber series, young talent concerts, the Gong concert series aimed at merging classical music with other genres, etc. The orchestra tries to maintain the classical tradition, while attempting to interest the modern listener. That is why it cooperates e.g. with the known Czech DJ Lowa on a project that connects orchestral music with electronic dance music.

Leoš Janáček

Leos Janacek was born in 1854 in the mountain village of Hukvaldy. He studied music in Brno, Prague, Vienna and Leipzig. In Brno, he founded a conservatory and, as a young composer, conducted the memorial service for Johann Gregor Mendel.

Every year, the JFO receives invitations to perform at various Czech and foreign festivals, while also heading out for tours in Europe, Asia and America. Its most successful performances aboard include a string of concerts in Germany in 2017, an open-air concert in Munich with opera superstars Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann in 2015, as well as a tour of the USA in 2009. In 2006, the JFO became the second Czech symphony orchestra to ever play concerts in Australia.

Besides concerts, the JFO also organizes educational and leisure activities for the general public though Filharmonie Plus (leisure activities for active seniors), a youth orchestra and various workshops.

The JFO’s home base is Ostrava’s House of Culture. For several years, the JFO has also been presenting itself at the Gong multifunctional auditorium as part of the Gong concert series.

Domovskou síní je pro JFO společenský sál Domu kultury města Ostravy a již několik let se v rámci koncertního cyklu Gong prezentuje také v multifunkční aule Gong v Dolních Vítkovicích.
