Cathedral of the Divine Saviour in Ostrava

The greatest example the explosive development of Ostrava is this impressive and grand-scaled structure in the heart of the city. In terms of size, the Cathedral of the Divine Saviour is second only to the basilica at Velehrad.
Its two towers stand almost seventy metres above ground. The cathedral can hold up to 4,000 churchgoers.

The municipal council decided to build a new church because the existing Saint Wenceslaus Church was no longer sufficient to accommodate the growing number of churchgoers that now populated the city, due to the area's dynamic development. A substantial donation was granted for the construction of this Catholic Church by a group of Jewish entrepreneurs, headed by industrialist Rothschild.

The cathedral is built in the Neo-Renaissance style and cavernous spaces are constructed in the interior. Two organs are located in the cathedral and relics of Saint Hedwig of Silesia have been placed at the altar. The cathedral is one of the many places in the historical city centre worthy of a visit. Enthusiasts of sacred architecture can continue on foot to Saint Wenceslaus Church and the Evangelical Church of Christ, just a short distance away.
