Jablunkov Pass

Jablunkov Pass, which crosses the ridge of the Beskydy Mountains and creates a natural gateway for entry into Slovakia, has always been used by merchants to move through this mountainous area. Findings of coins from Roman times testifies that a branch of the Amber Trail between the Baltic and the Mediterranean used to run through here.
From the 13th century, salt caravans used to move through the pass from the Polish mines of Wieliczka and in the 16th century and Slovak copper ran through here and was transported to nearly all of Europe. In Jablunkov, merchants of the time used to pay customs duty which meant great affluence for this city and so the square was even called Little Vienna.

In the 16th century, a fortress was built on the pass called 'Jablunkovská šance'. The remains of the fortifications are still found in the area and is one of the attractions for hiking tourists who pass through the local hills.

The pass is the starting point for exploring the Beskydy Mountains. A popular hike is to Gírovou kolem Čertových mlýnů (Gírová around Devil's mills). In Mosty u Jablunkova, there is also a sports complex, which is one of the best ski resorts in the area, and also features a roller coaster or bobsled.
