The location of the lookout tower above Jakubovice offers perfect views. Opava unfolds beneath you, with panoramic scenes of the Jeseníky Mountains on one side and the Beskydy Mountains on the other.
Moreover, this place, nicknamed Šance (Chance), also has a history of its own. It was a part of the fortifications that created Austria's line of defence against Prussia and protected the old imperial road linking
Hradec nad Moravicí with Starý and
Nový Jičín. The strategic importance of this place was highlighted by the visit of Emperor Joseph II, who came to inspect the fort in 1789. The famous general Ernst Gideon von Laudon accompanied the emperor on his visit. During another inspection of the border a year later, Laudon caught a chill, came down with pneumonia and died from complications of the illness in Nový Jičín.
