It is situated on a rocky spur above the valley of the Low Jeseník and visitors can not only admire the magnificence of medieval buildings, but also enjoy many events such as exhibitions, medieval fairs or sword tournaments, which take place in a period setting.

The castle was founded in the 14th century, it became an important bastion of the Hussite movement and after the defeat on the White Mountain it was acquired by the Order of German Knights. The Order gradually increased the protection of the castle, which is still the best preserved example of fortifications from the Thirty Years’ War. Despite its location on a rocky hill and its massive fortifications, it was eventually conquered by Swedish troops. During the Second World War it was a prison and a base for SS troops.

To continue learning about the local history, you can visit Bruntál chateau, for example, or, if you long to learn about rural life, we recommend the Kosárna in Karlovice.

Today, only the remains of the walls and half-collapsed stone arches remind us of the former glory of Vikštejn Castle. Its history is turbulent, Jan Amos Komenský stayed here when he left Fulnek after the White Mountain and hid in various places in Moravia before going into exile.

The castle on the steep hill above the bend of the Moravice River was built in the 14th century by Vítek of Kravaře. Like many other castles and fortresses in Moravia, it was damaged by the fighting between the Czech King George of Poděbrady and the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus. During the Thirty Years’ War, the castle was conquered by the Swedes and the Danes, but then the imperial army occupied it for a change and “for preventive reasons”, i.e. to prevent the castle from becoming a bastion of enemies again in the future, the imperial troops blew up the castle.

Today, the ruins of the castle are preserved so that the walls will not crumble further and will continue to be a romantic place for excursions with an amazing view of the landscape of the Low Jeseník and the Moravice River. Vikštejn is one of the most interesting places in Opava Silesia and a climb to it can be combined with a visit to the nearby town of Vítkov.

Fürstenwalde Castle used to stand on the top of Castle Mountain above Vrbno pod Pradědem. It was built as early as the 14th century and its first owner had a hunting and resting place here.

The castle changed hands and one of the lords of the castle was Prince Vladislav of Opole. One of the smaller battles with the Hussites, who did not conquer the castle, took place under the castle. Already in the sixteenth century the castle was falling into disrepair and becoming an uninhabited ruin. Today there are several original walls that remind us of this Gothic castle.

The castle thus fell within the sphere of influence of the Bishop of Olomouc, Bruno of Schauenburg, advisor and diplomat to the Czech kings Wenceslas I and Přemysl Otakar II. The castle was destroyed by the armies of King Matthias Corvinus, then repaired by the new owners until it received a fatal blow during the Thirty Years’ War, when the Swedes and Danes swept through. Since then the castle has been a ruin. The ruins of Fulštejn Castle are worth a visit, however, as the remains of the walls are still visible and tourists can get an idea of what such a medieval castle looked like.

The original castle probably belonged to the Hückenswagen family and was part of the defence system of the Moravian-Silesian border. Today, the castle from the thirteenth century has preserved its original walls and rooms reminiscent of the cellars of castle palaces.

During archaeological excavations, a statue of a woman, the so-called Šostýn Venus, was discovered in the castle. Although she is compared to the Venus of Věstonice or Landec, her origin is considerably younger. It is an ivory statuette from the thirteenth century. Archaeological findings from Šostýn Castle can be seen in the Kopřivnice Muzeum fojtství.

Its location basically meant its doom, because one of the last aristocratic owners, Petr of Žerotín, the lord of Šumperk, decided to build a new modern mansion in the form of a chateau in Janovice.

His servants, especially the manager of the local forests, still lived in Rabštejn.

Today, the castle resembles a few stone walls overgrown in the forest on a rocky spur.

It is still worth a visit, however, as the views of the mountains open up and tourists can feel the strategic location of the original castle.

On the hill above Krnov, besides the church and the lookout tower, there are also the ruins of a medieval castle. The castle is called Cvilín, but it can also be traced under the name of Šelenburk, after one of the lords who ruled here.

The castle was built as part of the provincial fortification in the thirteenth century and protected the area between Opava and Krnov. One of its owners was Duke Nicholas, the illegitimate son of Přemysl Otakar II. Šelenburk suffered a similar fate as many other castles in the area, such as Fulštejn or Rabštejn. It succumbed to the onslaught of Matthias Corvinus’ armies and then was finally destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. Today, the remains of the walls and foundations of this Gothic castle are freely accessible to people who want to look at the surrounding countryside or visit the local lookout tower Cvilín or the pilgrimage church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.

Even after the year 2000, only the original tower remained. Today it is the venue for various cultural events, including the Summer Shakespeare Festival, and its various exhibitions make it an interesting place to visit.

In the past, the castle guarded the border between Silesia and Moravia, but after Silesia became part of the Czech lands, it lost its strategic importance and the owners converted it into a chateau. It was then plundered by Napoleon’s soldiers, Danes, Wallenstein’s mercenaries and Swedish troops. An important guest at the castle was, for example, Cecilia Renata, sister of Emperor Ferdinand III. Habsburg, who stayed overnight here when she was on her way to her wedding to King Władysław of Poland.

At the time of the Industrial Revolution, coal was mined around the castle. As a result, the castle fell by up to 16 metres and gradually became decrepit. That’s why today it no longer stands on a hill, but on a plain.

The castle is connected to the historic centre of the town by a footbridge over the Ostravice River and is situated on a great cycle path that leads along the Ostravice River to the Beskydy Mountains. There are concerts, exhibitions, Christmas markets and other seasonal events for the whole family. And like any good castle, it has its own White Lady. She walks around with a candle in her left hand and a golden key in her right.
