It is situated on a rocky spur above the valley of the Low Jeseník and visitors can not only admire the magnificence of medieval buildings, but also enjoy many events such as exhibitions, medieval fairs or sword tournaments, which take place in a period setting.

The castle was founded in the 14th century, it became an important bastion of the Hussite movement and after the defeat on the White Mountain it was acquired by the Order of German Knights. The Order gradually increased the protection of the castle, which is still the best preserved example of fortifications from the Thirty Years’ War. Despite its location on a rocky hill and its massive fortifications, it was eventually conquered by Swedish troops. During the Second World War it was a prison and a base for SS troops.

To continue learning about the local history, you can visit Bruntál chateau, for example, or, if you long to learn about rural life, we recommend the Kosárna in Karlovice.

The treasure is now stored in the Museum of Těšínsko in Český Těšín, the statue of John of Nepomuk is back in its place after the reconstruction and the coins and documents from the present day are in the pedestal below it.

The statue of John of Nepomuk, who was tortured and thrown into the Vltava River at the end of the 14th century, stands in many Czech, Moravian and Silesian villages and towns. The one that can be admired by people in Bohumín was created by an unknown sculptor in the mid-18th century and stands in the square in Starý Bohumín.

The most massive liquidation action on the territory of Těšín Silesia during World War II was supposed to be a retaliation for a partisan action in which three members of the Těšín Gestapo were killed. This horrific event was thus placed alongside other reprisals such as the burning of Lidice and the extermination of Ležáky. After the war, Životice was called “Silesian Lidice” for a reason. At the Mother’s Monument, which is also a memorial to all the victims of the occupation, you can visit an exhibition building with a permanent museum exhibition. Through unique documents, photographs and period weapons and clothing, the exhibition presents not only the events surrounding the tragedy, but also the development of the occupation, the forms of Nazi repression, the Polish and Czech resistance and liberation.

The monument and the exhibition are part of the Museum of Těšínsko.

Two statues, one obelisk and one bronze sculpture commemorate the life and work of Jan Amos Komenský in Fulnek. This collection makes Fulnek the town with the largest number of statues of this philosopher.

One statue stands in the park near the Památník Jana Amose Komenského (Jan Amos Komenský Memorial) and comes from the workshop of sculptor Jan Štursa. It was commissioned in the 1920s and was originally to stand in the auditorium of the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University in Prague, opposite Myslbek’s statue of Jan Hus. Half a century later, in 1970, this bronze sculpture was placed on a granite pedestal in Fulnek.

The second imposing statue that a tourist will find in Fulnek is the sculpture of Jan Pelikán, which depicts the preacher Komenský with his right arm raised. This stone statue stands by the primary school and commemorates the opening of the first Czech school in Fulnek.

The obelisk with the memorial plaque of Komenský is located in the Žákovský háj (Pupils’ Grove), where the teacher of nations liked to teach his pupils directly in the open air. The obelisk is an early work of sculptor Olbram Zoubek.

A contemporary sculpture of the thinker by Igor Kitzberger is located in the café in the Knurr Palace at the corner of the Fulnek Square.

Jan Amos Komenský spent the happiest period of his life in Fulnek. He was a preacher of the Unity of the Brethren and Fulnek was the last place in Moravia where he preached freely before he went into exile. Another place that commemorates Komenský’s stay in Moravia is in nearby Suchdol nad Odrou. It is a lime tree with the inscription “Here J. A. Komenský preached between 1618 and 1621”.

The fountain in the square in Fulnek commemorates St. Jan Sarkander, a Catholic priest who also worked in nearby Příbor. Despite his torture in the Olomouc dungeon in 1620, Sarkander did not reveal what the nobleman Ladislav Popel of Lobkovice had confided to him during his confession.

The fountain is one of the treasures of Baroque art of Fulnek and the whole Moravské Kravařsko region. It dates back to the 1840s and is the only Baroque fountain in the Nový Jičín district. The lower part of the fountain is in the shape of a four-leaf clover and the sculpture consists of a figure of a saint and two angels. The fountain stands in Fulnek because one of the local noblemen, Mr. Skrbenský of Hřišť’, took part in the harsh interrogations of Jan Sarkander in Olomouc. Today, the fountain has been completely renovated and is one of the monuments of Fulnek’s Baroque art that attracts tourists to the town.

Until recently, few people in Ostrava knew that there was a chateau in Vítkovice. It was so well hidden inside the metallurgical and engineering giant Vítkovice that it was not visible at all.

The Rothschilds, the owners of the Vítkovice ironworks, had the castle built in the mid-nineteenth century so that they would have a place to stay when they came to Ostrava. Later it served as the headquarters of the company. The building was connected by a castle park directly to the ironworks and formed one natural unit with the area, which is now called Dolní Vítkovice. However, after the Second World War and during the period of rapid industrial development, the park and the building itself gave way to the needs of the company and deteriorated.

Today the chateau serves its original purpose, i.e. not as a place of residence of the Rothschilds, but as a representative space of the Vítkovice company.

The largest of them stood in the vicinity of St. Wenceslas Church. It was called the Church Gate and served as a link to Silesia.

Archaeological findings have shown that there was also a moat here in the Middle Ages, which travellers had to cross on a falling bridge. Historians discovered this during the construction of one of the most modern and architecturally interesting houses in Ostrava, which now stands on this site and is named Ostrava Gate after the mediaeval fortification. In addition to modern living inside Ostrava’s historic core, a generous space for a café was created.

Aréna Chamber Theatre, which was founded as a successor to Divadlo hudby (Music Theatre), which had been operating in Ostrava since 1951, has gradually developed into the top of the Czech theatre scene over the quarter of a century of its existence. This is evidenced by its exceptional successes on a national scale, culminating in four times winning the highest award of Theatre of the Year (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017).

It focuses on the so-called theatre of charismatic personalities, through which it presents interesting social themes. It presents them in a modern chamber hall for about 100 spectators. The foyer of the theatre, where various social events such as photographic exhibitions are regularly held, also offers an architecturally and design-wise attractive environment. For many years, the Aréna Chamber Theatre has been a company whose productions are regularly recorded by Czech Television and which is invited to prestigious Czech and international theatre festivals.
