Experience complete silence and all-consuming darkness in one of only two accessible slate mines in the Czech Republic. With a helmet and a headlamp on your head, you will go on a ninety-minute adventure, where you will experience absolute darkness and silence, and those who love a bit of adrenaline will be able to climb down a 20-metre-long connecting chimney on ladders, together with a guide dressed in miners’ overalls - “fáračky".

In the mine shaft, where time seems to have stopped in the 19th century, the guide will introduce you to the hard life of the miners and tell the bittersweet story of the owners with a touch of romance. After the tour, you can then carve your own heart out of slate with special scissors as a souvenir and refresh yourself with drinks chilled on the “eighth step” right in the mine.

One of the biggest tourist attractions of Ostrava is undoubtedly Dolní Vítkovice. The former industrial complex is a unique example of an industrial monument sensitively transformed into a unique educational, cultural and social centre. Dolní Vítkovice is the first monument in the Czech Republic to be listed as a European Cultural Heritage Site.

The entire process of iron production will be explained to you during your tour by guides – often former employees of the ironworks. You will be guided through the former Hlubina mine, which was one of the deepest in Ostrava, the coking plant, where coke was made from coal, and you will take a look inside the blast furnace. You will be taken to the top of the blast furnace by a real skip lift, which used to be used to transport coke here.

The Bolt Tower, the helical lookout christened by the legendary athlete Usain Bolt, was literally built right on top of a blast furnace. Inside, you can enjoy a coffee in the café with a view of the whole city. At almost 80 metres above the ground, it has become the highest observation point in the city – it is even higher than the terrace of the New Town Hall observation tower in the centre of the Moravian-Silesian capital.

Another unique feature of Dolní Vítkovice is the former huge gas tank, which has been transformed into a unique concert and exhibition building, the Gong Multifunctional Hall.

If you don’t visit the Big and Small World of Technology in Dolní Vítkovice, it’s like you have never even been here! Both exhibitions, which will keep the whole family entertained, are full of interactive educational attractions. A new feature of the industrial complex is a branch of the National Museum of Agriculture, which was created in one of the industrial halls.

Dolní Vítkovice has become a centre of cultural and social life. Highlights include the legendary Colours of Ostrava and Beats for Love festivals, two of the biggest music festivals in Europe!

Vítkovice Ironworks was founded in 1828 by the Archbishop of Olomouc, Archduke Rudolf, as the most modern ironworks in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. All ironworks and mining works were completed approximately 160 years later.

If you are interested in the industrial history of the “Steel City”, continue on to Landek Park, where you can visit the Mining Museum, or the former Michal Mine.

A perfect example of how an old industrial area can be transformed into a modern cultural stand is the Gong auditorium in Dolní Vítkovice. Today, no one in the hall would realise that they are in a huge gas tank. Yet from the outside, there is nothing to suggest that this industrial building houses modern halls, exhibition spaces and restaurants.

It is a huge cylinder that, thanks to the retractable roof, has increased in volume according to how much gas the blast furnaces have produced. It is even said that the owners of the ironworks, when they came to Ostrava, could tell from a distance by the size of the gas chamber whether iron production was running at full speed. During the liberation of Ostrava at the end of the Second World War, the gasholder got hit by an aerial bomb. If it had exploded in an environment full of gas, a large part of the city would have turned into a crater. The bomb flew through the gasholder and lodged in the sludge at the bottom, where it remained unexploded until 1970!

The giant building was given a new life after the end of iron production and after Dolní Vítkovice gradually became a tourist attraction of Ostrava. The original space was transformed into a multifunctional hall that can accommodate up to 1,500 spectators. However, it still retains much of its original form, so for example, on the floor at the entrance you walk in style on metal plates connected by huge rivets. Concerts, balls and similar events are held here. The hall has won award after award, with the Gong being ranked among the top 10 buildings in the world at the Munich trade fair.

The entire Dolní Vítkovice, which is among other things the venue of the Colours of Ostrava music festival, is being transformed into a cultural stand.
