The Jablunkov Šance are a typical example of fortification of a mountain crossing area. It is a unique fortification monument that has no comparable analogue not only in the Czech Republic. Velká šance in Mosty u Jablunkova formed the central point of this fortification system. Centuries ago, the šance prevented foreigners from entering the Jablunkov Pass and further into the country – today they attract visitors.

It is the last surviving mill of the so-called German type in this area and it is a testament to the technical prowess of the people of the Moravské Kravařsko region and this part of Silesia.

The origin of the mill is unclear. One of the versions says that the mill was transported from nearby Leskovec in 1910, while the other version says that the mill stood in Bravinné as early as 1830. It is not easy to trace the exact fact because there were many similar windmills in this flat area and the records of them are intertwined.

The windmill is part of the Technotrail, and a tour is possible by appointment.

Even after more than a hundred years, the remains of the impressive work of art that is the unfinished railway line can still be seen in the vicinity of Fulnek. Embankments, cuts in the woods and even a tunnel have remained from this magnificent project to this day.

Opava stood outside the main railway corridor Olomouc – Ostrava – Bohumín. The line, built by a consortium called the Moravian-Silesian Central Railway, wanted to take advantage of the business boom in Silesia and connect the area around Opava and Fulnek via Valašské Meziříčí to Trenčín.

The business plan was delayed by disputes over the exact route of the line. Representatives of towns and villages wanted to push for the tracks to go through their territory. After the option that went through Fulnek won out, the economic crisis came into play. The collapse of the Vienna Stock Exchange in 1873 meant that there was not enough money for the debt-laden project.

In the meantime, field work had already begun, for which builders and workers arrived from Italy and Slovakia. The Italians in particular caused a stir in the local pubs, and various fights were recorded. In Chvalíkovice, the local mayor was stabbed and decided to settle the pub dispute. Twelve Italians were brought to court in Opava. In Jakubčovice, one of the workers was injured by a local constable who intervened in another such fight.

The workers caused further trouble when they used explosives to catch fish in the Moravice. They earned themselves the pejorative nickname of ” rascals” among the locals. There were 1,600 men and 200 horses working on the railway. Even the construction itself required emergencies, for example, two workers were buried near Chvalíkovice, one died on the spot, the other succumbed to his injuries later.

The construction of the railway is associated with many important personalities and businessmen of the time. The construction was managed by the Klein brothers’ company, and the company’s shareholders included Robert Lichnovský from Voštice, a friend of Ferenc Liszt, and Alois Larisch, a businessman and mayor of Krnov.

Today, the remains of the line under construction make it possible to search for the secrets of the past and at the same time to take a relaxing stroll through the picturesque landscape.

A proof of the time when the town of Odry was an important seat of the Hussite armies is the so-called Semi-Circular Bastion, which is part of the former Gothic fortifications.

Článek Semi-circular Bastion in Odry se nejdříve objevil na Northern Moravia.

The stone tower was probably built in the 15th century as protection and shelter for the Hussite patrols that guarded the town of Odry. Later it probably served as a jail and today this Gothic structure is open to the public. You can admire the loopholes protecting the entrance to the town as well as an exhibition of beer glass, tiles and bricks.

The Hussites established an important centre of their movement in Odry after the town was conquered by the Hussite governor Jan Tovačovský of Cimburk in 1427. The Lithuanian prince Sigismund Korybutovich even stayed here and negotiated aid for the battles in his country. The Hussites left Odry only after the lost battle of Lipany.

One of the technical monuments that commemorate the time when everything was powered by the power of water is in Bernartice nad Odrou. This place is also connected with the flow of the Odra River and is located in the tourist area of Moravské Kravařsko.

The mill was unlucky in its misfortune – it stopped grinding, like other similar technical uniquenesses, in the 1950s, but unlike other mills, the equipment did not end up in scrap, because it basically held the whole structure together. Thanks to this, not only the building but also the original mill equipment has survived to this day. Today, the daughter of the original miller lives in the building and gives visitors a guided tour of this unique piece of technology.

The main attractions are the shows in the Planetarium Hall with spherical projection and a digital space simulator. Spherical films are shown here, mostly popularising space, cosmology and other natural sciences. However, there are also musical performances with recorded and live music.

Visitors to the Ostrava Planetarium can look at the real universe through astronomical telescopes during regular public observations or when watching special phenomena such as solar and lunar eclipses. For those more seriously interested in scientific knowledge, popularisation lectures are held in the Cinema Hall. Last but not least, visitors can play with dozens of interactive exhibits in the Experimentarium.

The programme of the Ostrava Planetarium is intended for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools and the general public.

Public observations of the night sky with telescopes are always held after dark on selected days according to the current programme. In summer, visitors can also observe the Sun with special telescopes with filters. All observations take place only in good weather with minimal cloud cover and no rain.

At that time, there were many similar furnaces in the area where iron was smelted and ‘hamry’ (hammers or hammer mills) where the raw material was refined. The furnace near Drakov is the last one to survive. It is an important technical monument that commemorates the mining and processing of iron ore.

Visitors who are brought here by the small train Podhoráček can have a beer Trubač from the nearby brewery in Štramberk. They can also stay overnight in stylish rooms. Of course, there are delicious grilled specialties prepared in the gazebo near the water embankment.

Today, in the beautiful premises of the monastery college, there is a museum that will introduce you to the traditional, often now extinct, production methods of processing natural materials. The Center of Traditional Technologies in Příbor is dedicated to research and presentation of handicraft skills. A small interactive “experimentarium” is open to visitors, where it is possible to touch many materials and try out some techniques.

Interesting fact: In the permanent exhibition you will see, among other things, a shirt made of nettle fibre, for which more than two thousand nettle stalks were used.
