Within the individual stops of the educational trail, visitors will learn a lot of information about the nature of the Poodří Protected Landscape Area, the formation of the Moravian Gate landscape and the evolution of plant and animal species in this area. Visitors to the educational trail also have the opportunity to see many examples of insensitive human intervention in the landscape and nature.

The educational subtext of the School Educational Trail, as well as the guidebook of this educational trail, is aimed at children, where the texts describe the basic principles of nature in a very pleasant and comprehensible way for children. In addition, the printed guide is supplemented by a number of thematic children’s drawings, including individual texts written in children’s handwriting.

Life along the course of such a mighty river as the Odra is also associated with frequent floods. An educational trail focusing on this topic can be walked near Jeseník nad Odra.

After all, Jeseník nad Odrou has its own experience with the water element and the locals remember very well the local flood that flooded virtually the entire village in 2010. The educational trail is four and a half kilometres long and at nine stops you can read about the benefits of the river for the landscape and how the Chráněná krajinná oblast Poodří (Poodří Protected Landscape Area), with its meanders and floodplain forests, can capture a huge amount of water and thus form a natural and ingenious protection for the city of Ostrava.

Visitors to this part of the Poodří also learn about the protection that the local forests give to many bird species, including the endangered sea eagle.

The Kotvice Educational Trail leads through one of the most valuable areas of the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. It focuses on the floodplain landscape with typical floodplain forests, the lowland character of the meandering Odra River (with many bends in the flat terrain), the system of old branches and pools with permanent and periodic water levels and the historically long-standing use of the area also as meadows and ponds.

Článek Kotvice Educational Trail se nejdříve objevil na Northern Moravia.

The floodplain forest is most beautiful in spring, when most of the herbs bloom. It takes on its colourful splendour in autumn, when each tree dyes its leaves a different shade of the colour palette. The ponds are very rich in waterfowl, which nest in them, and in the spring and autumn they are enriched by species that just wander through the area from south to north and back again. In summer, the water surfaces are covered with very rare plants that are only found in still waters. These are, for example, the floating anchor (Trapa natans), after which the pond is named, but also the Kotvice nature reserve.

The Odra River is interesting in all seasons with its meandering course and beautiful bank vegetation, but it attracts observers most when there is more water. The pools and old river arms are a rewarding object of observation at the time of the flowering of the yellow coneflower, the emblematic flower of the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. At this time of year, a large number of different species of dragonflies and other insects can be seen above the water surface; on the leaves floating on the water surface we can see most often the screech owls, in the meadow vegetation or on the bushes the attentive visitor can also see common sundews.

The meadows themselves, now free of fertilisation again, begin to burst into colour in May, are in full bloom in June and again in late July and August. The educational trail is accessible by bus from the bus stop in Nová Horka, or from the ČD station in Studénka, by turning off the yellow tourist marker along the old “Štramberská track” to the Kotvice pond.

The visitor who knows how to be quiet in nature will find a lot of interesting things to do there in every season, except for the water spills during the annual flooding of the Odra floodplain.

Length (km)

3,6

Number of stops

10

Start

Pod mlýnem under Nová Horka

Finnish

At the Pásečný most in Studénka, where the lake joins the Mlýnka

Theme/focus

the trail focuses on floodplain ecosystems with characteristics of floodplain forests, ponds, meadow communities, permanent and periodic pools of the Odra River, with a list of typical plant and animal species

Type of trail

for pedestrians only

Difficulty

physically undemanding, route on flat terrain

Tour time (approximate)

3-4 hours according to the people

The educational trail was opened on 28 May 2005 and leads from Ovčárna to the top of Praděd with detours to Barborka and Švýcárna. During the ascent from Ovčárna to the top of Praděd, the trail introduces visitors to the Jeseníky Mountains in an unconventional way to the natural, historical and cultural attractions of the Praděd area. This area is protected as the Praděd National Nature Reserve. The guide on the trail is the elf from Peter's Stones, Praděd's helper.

The Praděd National Nature Reserve is one of the best preserved natural areas in the Czech Republic. Visitors can admire unique examples of natural life and landscapes that can usually be seen in larger mountain ranges hundreds of kilometres away or in Nordic landscapes. Equally interesting is the story of the centuries-old coexistence of man and the harsh nature of the Jeseníky region around Praděd. The starting point of the trail at the car park near Ovčárna can be reached by bus from Hvězda. It is possible to reach Hvězda by car or bus. An alternative trailhead is the Švýcárna hut. The trail ends at the top of Praděd. The whole trail is asphalted and suitable for people with reduced mobility. On public holidays and weekends this trail is massively used, so we recommend using other days for a comfortable walk. Refreshments are available at several locations in the mountain huts past which the trail winds. The trail is only open in summer (May-September).
