The rules are similar to most European countries. Here are some basic guidelines:
- motor vehicles may be operated by a holder of an internationally recognized driving license. The driver must be at least 18 years old
- drive on the right side of the road
- the speed limit in a town is 50 km/h (30mph), beginning at the white sign marking the name of the town
- the speed limit outside of towns is 90 km/h (55 mph), 110 km/h (65 mph) on two-lane freeways and 130 km/h (80 mph) on highways
- you must have a valid highway vignette affixed to your windshield in order to drive on highways
- drivers are subject to strict zero-tolerance for alcohol
- headlights must be on at all times
- using cell phones while driving is only allowed with the use of hands-free technology
- children weighing less than 36 kg and shorter than 150 cm must sit in a child safety seat
