Central square in Hlučín
As early as the Middle Ages, Hlučín grew from an almost square-shaped square, which was unusual in this area. Most Silesian towns had rather longitudinal squares, which usually followed the course of the river. Regular squares were a form of colonisation and were "imposed" on the towns as a fashion from France and Germany. In the Bohemian lands, it meant strengthening the influence of the Přemyslid government.
Such a square, i.e. regular and almost square, is still the core of the town of Hlučín today. The houses in the square acquired their present appearance in the 19th century, but they mostly stand on the original plots from the Middle Ages. Today, the square is a conservation area with a pleasant atmosphere of restaurants and cafés. From the square you can walk down a small alley to the Hlučín Chateau, which houses the town’s information centre and the Hlučín Museum.
