The Beskydy Mountains

Active holidays and traditional specialties

The unspoiled nature of the Beskydy Mountains combined with the traditional roots of the indigenous people – Valašsko, who have been farming and living in this harsh landscape for centuries. The connection between people and mountains await you at every turn on your journey through Valašsko.

This area unfolds below Lysa hora, the queen of the Beskydy Mountain peaks, where the views will take your breath away. In the foothills you can find historical towns, such as Novy Jicin, where you can learn more about traditional hat manufacturing. The beauty of Štramberk, with its narrow alleyways that wind among traditional wooden houses, reflects the fact that this ancient village is nick-named the Moravian Bethlehem. In this region you may find some memorials to some of history’s greats -the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, was born here and he drew inspiration from the world-famous composer Leos Janacek.

On your wanders, be sure to sample some local specialties such as traditional frgály (a sweet, flat, tart), Štramberk ears (ginger bread style biscuits) or excellent beer from one of the local microbreweries. For fans of winter sports, there are excellently maintained slopes and kilometers of cross-country trails prepared.
