Frýdek Chateau
Frýdek Chateau stands on a hill overlooking the Ostravice River and is one of the great attractions for visitors to the Podbeskydí region. People can go on several visitor tours, from the galleries of the chateau there are magnificent views of the town and the Beskydy Mountains.
As early as the fourteenth century, the fortress of the Piast princes of Těšín stood here, and at the end of the eighteenth century the Habsburgs bought the estate and the castle. Today you can see the interiors of the castle, including the chapel of St. Barbara and the knight’s hall.
There are many legends associated with the chateau. One of them says that the chateau’s well is the entrance to the underground, from where secret passages lead to the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and to one of the palaces in the square. In reality, the well is a huge underground fridge where meat was stored in the cold of the deep cellar. However, various passages have been found around the castle, but it is not clear where they lead, as they are buried.
There is also a small chamber in the chateau where the brigand Ondráš was imprisoned. Ondráš still managed to escape from there, but he was later caught and punished by execution.
