Hukvaldy Castle

The ruins of Hukvaldy Castle are situated on a hill above the town of the same name, which is the birthplace of the composer Leoš Janáček. It is one of the largest castle ruins in the Czech Republic. The castle is surrounded by a large game preserve, where you can observe herds of fallow deer or touch the statue of Janáček's fox Bystrouška for luck.

The castle dates back to the thirteenth century and was built to protect the trade route from Olomouc to Kraków. It was gradually rebuilt to withstand military technology and weapons, which were constantly improving.

Today, the castle’s extensive grounds are open to visitors, who can admire great views of the surrounding area, for example from the castle tower. The best preserved part of the castle is the Chapel of St. Andrew, where cultural events are held.
