Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The Gothic monument is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the centre of Opava. The construction of the church, still in Romanesque style at that time, began in 1204. In the 14th century, the representatives of the Order of German Knights gave the church its present form, exactly in the spirit of Silesian architecture of that time. The church has Gothic elements and is built of unplastered bricks.
An interesting feature is one of the two towers, where a Baroque extension was built on the original Gothic foundation, which contrasts so strongly with the neighbouring original tower with its battlements and gallery. Thanks to this Baroque extension, the tower reaches an impressive 102 metres, making it the tallest church tower in Silesia.
Today, the church is one of the most valuable monuments of the town, a protected cultural monument, and the cathedral of the Ostrava-Opava diocese. The term “concathedral” describes the fact that the diocese is housed in two churches.
