Saint Wenceslaus Church
The former gothic Saint Wenceslaus Church in the centre of Opava was once part of a Dominican monastery. Today, along with the restored monastery, it serves as a pillar of culture, and plays host to expositions, among other events.
Restoration of the church is linked to sculptor Kurt Gebauer, a native of nearby Hradec nad Moravicí, who, in the early 21st century, began to uncover the building’s original paintings in the manner of Italian restorers. This sensitive approach, in which the paintings are left in the state in which they were discovered, also helped the church to garner an award for the 2007 interior of the year from the Czech Chamber of Architects.
Saint Wenceslaus Church, just like the adjacent monastery, can also be explored with a tour guide.
