Mineral Museum at the chateau in Kunín
The Kunín Chateau attracts visitors not only because it is a jewel of Baroque architecture of the Moravské Kravařsko region with a historically furnished interior. Its premises are used for many exhibitions, cultural events and the tourist can also find a museum here. It is famous for its collection of natural history and especially of rocks, minerals and fossils.
The collection dates back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was founded by the then owner of Kunín chateau and estate, Marie Walburga Countess Truchsess – Waldburd – Zeil. The mission of this collection was very noble, as the minerals served as a teaching aid for the education of children from poor families, who gained knowledge thanks to the Countess.
Marie Walburga continuously expanded her collection thanks to her frequent travels in Europe. She collected not only minerals and fossils, but also many scientific books and various instruments related to geology. The collection numbered up to 3,000 pieces and survived even Maria Walburg, who died in 1828. The precious collection was only lost in 1945 as a result of the Second World War.
In recent years, like the entire chateau in Kunín, the collection has literally risen from the ashes. Bronislav Novosad from Kunín took care of it and exhibited his mineral collection here. The collection was supplemented by exhibits of other collectors and geologists, with minerals from all over the Czech Republic.
