Muzeum Šipka Štramberk

In the picturesque town of Štramberk, which is famous for its gingerbread ears as well as for its significant archaeological findings on the Kotouč hill and in the Šipka cave, you can visit a new museum named after the cave in the building of the former Masné krámy.

And not only that! After entering the museum, you will find yourself in the Šipka cave! And what’s more, in the times when the place was inhabited by Neanderthal man! In fact, there is a faithful miniature of the cave, including lights and sounds. The exhibition dedicated to archaeology, paleontology and geology also includes a replica of the jaw of the Neanderthal child that made the site famous. It was found in Šipka on 26 August 1880 by Karel Jaroslav Maška, a professor at the Nový Jičín Grammar School. Unfortunately, the original was destroyed at the end of the Second World War during a fire in the Mikulov castle. No less interesting is the model of a Mesozoic aquarium, animal bones, mammoth molars or a prepared skull of a cave bear.
