Church of St. Catherine

On the site of today's St. Catherine's Church in Horní Benešov there was probably a church (probably wooden at that time) already in the middle of the thirteenth century, when the settlement was founded.

However, this church was destroyed by the armies of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, and therefore, at the beginning of the sixteenth century, a church was built of stone which is very similar to the present one.

In the period after the Thirty Years’ War, the church had two altars, one of which was used to convert Lutheran believers who were leaving their faith at that time. The church acquired its present appearance during the Baroque period. A stone wall with a Stations of the Cross and three chapels runs around the church.
