The Opava River

Three mountain streams form the Opava River. The most famous of them is the Bílá Opava, which rises below the peak of Praděd near the famous Barborka cottage. The Bílá Opava has formed a canyon in the mountain massif, which is one of the most fascinating places in these mountains. The hiking trail and educational trail around the Bílá Opava is one of the most beautiful things you can experience in the Jeseníky Mountains.

The Černá Opava springs under the Orlík hill near the hiking trail between the Videlské sedlo and Rejvíz. The third stream is the Střední Opava, which rises to the surface at Silon’s hut near the Videlské sedlo. At Vrbno pod Pradědem, the river forms a single stream. The Opava is a beautiful mountain river, especially in the stretch between Vrbno pod Pradědem and Krnov it creates rapids, bends and pools.

Between Opava and Ostrava, the river loses its predatory character and becomes more majestic. It flows through a wide landscape of meadows and floodplain forests. It is home to many water birds, including very rare protected species. In Ostrava, the Opava flows into the European Odra River.
