Ruins of Fulštejn Castle
The location of Fulštejn Castle was of strategic importance, as it was built in the thirteenth century on an elevation above the Osoblaha River, guarding the Osoblažský výběžek plain.
The castle thus fell within the sphere of influence of the Bishop of Olomouc, Bruno of Schauenburg, advisor and diplomat to the Czech kings Wenceslas I and Přemysl Otakar II. The castle was destroyed by the armies of King Matthias Corvinus, then repaired by the new owners until it received a fatal blow during the Thirty Years’ War, when the Swedes and Danes swept through. Since then the castle has been a ruin. The ruins of Fulštejn Castle are worth a visit, however, as the remains of the walls are still visible and tourists can get an idea of what such a medieval castle looked like.
