Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Vítkov

The idea that a church in Vitkov could stand on a hill near the town was considered as early as the Middle Ages. However, in the Chronicle this hill is marked as unsuitable for such purposes. Today's historians believe that this is how the medievals evaluated the fact that the church would be separated from the inhabited part of the town.

As Vitkov grew, this argument fell away as the hill became part of the town. So, in the early 20th century, it was built exactly there. Today, the neo-Gothic Church of the Assumption is a landmark of Vitkov and fits perfectly into the overall view of the town.

The church was built with self-help and donations. For example, Count Camillo Razumovsky donated the wood needed for the construction, and the peasants undertook to bring the material for free.

The walls are made of stone, and according to legend, it is stone that was dug up during the excavation of the foundations. Although the church is on a hill, a spring of water gushed out during the digging of the foundations, so strong that the masons used it throughout the construction.

A rarity is the ceiling vault, which was created by fabric dipped in plaster and shaped into an arched Gothic form. While in other churches it is common to walk on the vaults to the roof trusses or to the bells, here a system of bridges had to be set up, because the churchgoer would have fallen through the shell among the congregation.
