Petr Bezruč Memorial
The birthplace of the Silesian bard, poet Petr Bezruč, stands in a picturesque square in the centre of Opava. Visitors can learn about the life and work of Bezruč and many other Silesian authors. At the end of the permanent exhibition there are samples of many foreign language editions of Bezruč's most famous collection Silesian Songs.
Petr Bezruč, by his own name Vladimír Vašek, was born in 1867, studied at Charles University, but did not complete his studies. He worked as a postal clerk in Brno and Místek. At the same time, he wrote sharp and even riotous poems with social themes about the difficult life of the Silesian people. His culminating work is Silesian Songs.
He was an avid hiker and nature lover, and so many places bear his name because he actually stayed there. He spent his retirement in his cabin in Ostravice below Lysá hora. He lived a quaint, bachelor’s life and referred to himself as an “old lizard”.
