Statues of birds on Ptačí vrch

Three two-metre high metal statues of birds on Ptačí vrch in Opava turn their heads and their eyes glow after dark. The work of sculptor Kurt Gebauer, who was born in Hradec nad Moravicí, is known for seeking unconventional solutions and these sculptures prove it.

The work of one of the best contemporary sculptors can also be seen in front of the Opava House of Arts, where his “Running Girl” stands. In Hradec nad Moravicí, visitors to the chateau are greeted by a sculpture entitled “Dream of Flying”, which Kurt Gebauer placed directly in the crown of a massive tree.

Birds (the real, living ones) have belonged to Ptačí vrch since the 19th century, when they used to come here to drink water from the fountain. There used to be aviaries here too, around which the people of Opava liked to go for walks with their children.
