The Golden Spike

The Golden Spike in Ostrava is the most significant athletic meeting on Czech territory, one of the oldest athletic competitions in Europe. The best athletes in the world compete in it.

The Golden Spike Ostrava is known for its unique atmosphere and a massive number of fans who fill the stands of the City stadium in Ostrava-Vítkovice. The event has been held here since 1961, continuously except for 1999. Almost all the megastars of world sports have shown their talent here in the history of the event – the fantastic Cuban 800m runner Alberto Juantorena, the Polish sprinter Irena Szewinska, the phenomenal Mozambican middle-distance runner Maria Mutola, the unbeatable Kenyan Dane Wilson Kipketer, the amazing Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj. Crowd favorites were Dayron Robles and particularly Usain Bolt.
