Štramberské uši (Štramberk's Ears)

This treat is offered by many shops and cafes in Štramberk and are called Štramberské uši (ears). It's a little cone of baked pastry, flavored with honey and a secret mix of spices. Since 2000, it has been ruled that a product bearing this name can only be baked in the territory of the town.
This special gingerbread is a reminder of the famous victory of the locals over the Tartar invaders from Mongolia, who in the 13th century set up camp below the hill Kotouč. According to legend, the enemy army was washed away due to torrential rains and also the fact that the local people broke the banks of the dam. In the flooded camp, the citizens found a bag with salted ears that belonged to christian soldiers which were sent to the enemy's chieftain as proof of military success.

In many cottages, people began to bake the ear-shaped pastry-cones to commemorate this defeat of the Tatars. If you come to Štramberk, definitely do not forget to try the local specialty.
