Did you know that Ostrava has its own "active" volcano? Yes! Halda Ema, which is still smouldering and in its interior we could measure up to 1,500°C! On its reddish peak at 315 m above sea level you will have the whole city and its surroundings in the palm of your hand!

Článek Halda Ema se nejdříve objevil na Northern Moravia.

The cone-shaped heap was formed by heaping waste rock from Ostrava’s Trojice mine. Its origins date back to the early 20th century. In the 1960s, the core of the heap caught fire and is still burning today. Thanks to the high temperature, new rare minerals are being formed inside the hill and the heat emanating from the hill gives it a subtropical climate. There is no snow on the mound, thermophilic plants grow here and there is also steppe fauna! The whitish clouds of gases, mainly containing sulphur dioxide, that rise from the mountain make Ema a magical place…

You can reach its top by following an educational trail mapping the mining history of the town. It starts at the tram stop at Černá louka behind the theatre and leads you along the footbridge over the Ostravice River, past the Silesian Ostrava Castle and through the streets of charming Silesian Ostrava.

The second highest peak of the Jeseníky Mountains is Vysoká hole, which is on a beautiful ridge route from Ovčárna towards Jelení hřbet. Near the top there was a historical border between Moravia and Silesia and there is still a sandstone border stone from the seventeenth century.

The plateau formed on this ridge attracted military strategists. The Czechoslovak army held artillery exercises here in the 1920s, and the German Luftwaffe built a field airfield here, 1,400 metres above sea level. From Vysoká hole you can see amazing views of Praděd, Dlouhé Stráně and other mountain peaks, as well as Bruntál and Opava. One of the rarest natural parts of the mountains, the Velká kotlina, and one of the most important botanical localities in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, is located here.

The educational trail leads mostly along forest paths through rugged terrain in mostly coniferous stands. There is also a small forest playground on the trail. The entire trail passes through the border area with Poland in the Janov district and introduces the visitor to the history of the area, the function of forests and forest management. It also draws the visitor's attention to the impact of man on the environment and the forest. The trail is about 3.6 km long and takes about 3 hours for hikers to complete. The entire route follows marked hiking trails. There are 7 stops along the trail, where there are accompanying boards with information for hikers.

The Velký Roudný hill with its 780 metres is the highest volcano that wrinkled the landscape around Bruntál two million years ago. Together with Malý Roudný, it forms a dominant feature of the landscape where volcanic activity is clearly visible. Both hills contrast beautifully with the water surface of the Slezská Harta dam.

Článek Velký Roudný Hill se nejdříve objevil na Northern Moravia.

The hill of Velký Roudný used to be a pilgrimage site and a Stations of the Cross led to the chapel. Both the chapel and the Stations of the Cross have been restored in recent years. From the wooden lookout tower at the top you can see the panorama of the Jeseníky Mountains, Slezská Harta and the vast landscape of the Bruntál region. There are places in the surroundings where you can find the remains of lava flows of these now extinct volcanoes. One of the most interesting places where the lava formed thick layers still visible today are the Razová Tuffites near the village of Razová and the lava stream near Mezina.

The educational trail Po volkanitech (“Following the Volcanoes”) will take you to the top of the peak and at fifteen stops in the vicinity of the Slezská Harta dam you will learn about volcanic activity in the Bruntál region.
