Chapel of the Holy Cross
One of the most valuable monuments in Opava is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, also known as the Swedish Chapel. You will not find it directly in the historical centre of the city in the part called Kateřinky. The chapel is one of the historical buildings that can be visited with a guide and therefore an expert lecturer will guide you to this distinctive building.
The chapel impresses at first glance with its monumentality, with the red brick structure growing further on the stone lower floor. The first mention of this building dates back to the end of the 14th century, when Prince Přemek of Opava had it built as a shrine.
The original Chapel of the Holy Cross is now also called the Swedish Chapel because it served the Swedes as a place of Protestant worship during the Thirty Years’ War.
Today the chapel serves as one of the biggest magnets that attracts tourists to Opava. The original frescoes, although only their torsos have survived, represent Moravian monumental painting and depict the fifteen stops before the Last Judgement.
