Church of Our Lady Queen in Mariánské Hory
The growing importance of Ostrava gave rise to the magnificent church in Mariánské Hory. The project from the beginning of the twentieth century seemed to the local councillors to be too extravagant and the church unnecessarily large and therefore expensive.
Today, the church with its slender towers more than 70 metres high is the pride of Mariánské Hory and fits in perfectly with the surrounding buildings, which, like Přívoz, were designed by the Viennese architect Camillo Sitte. The patron of the construction of the Church of Our Lady Queen was Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este.
The interior of the Art Nouveau church is decorated with chandeliers designed by Jan Kotěra, an important architect of the time, and visitors can admire the painting of Archangel Michael by Luděk Marold, the author of the largest Czech painting – the Battle of Lipany panorama.
