Church of St. Michael the Archangel

One of the most important monuments in Vrbno pod Pradědem is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which is connected with a curious story: the original church could no longer accommodate the faithful, so it was demolished in 1837 and a new church was built.

Originally it was supposed to have two towers, but the bedrock proved unable to bear the weight, so a church with one tower in the middle of the gable wall was built. But this was not the only shortcoming in the construction of the church in Vrbno. When the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights came to Vrbno thinking that the church would shine with newness, he was so appalled by the poor quality of the work that he wanted to have the church blown up. The walls of the church were cracking, the work was delayed, and the Grand Master was very indignant. Eventually he changed his mind and ordered the cracked walls to be reinforced with iron bars and the cracks repaired.

Today the church is a monumental building with pure Empire features.
