Church of St. Nicholas in Nýdek

One of the examples of what the church buildings in the Těšín Beskydy region looked like is the Church of St. Nicholas in Nýdek. Like any wooden building, it has undergone many renovations, yet it retains much of its original charm from the 16th century when it was built in Nýdek.

Today, the church has been restored to resemble its original appearance as closely as possible. The wooden shingles have returned to the roof and the base is again made of natural stone as it once was. The story of this church is also the story of the religious movements that have marked the area. When the church was built, it was evangelical. However, like many other churches in the area, the one in Nýdek was taken away from the Protestants and became Catholic in the mid-17th century. When Emperor Joseph II issued his Toleration Patent, the vast majority of Nýdek’s inhabitants left the Catholic faith and returned to their original Protestant religion.
