Cyril and Methodius trail to Radhošt’
The Chapel of Cyril and Methodius at the top of Radhošt' Mountain is an important religious monument and a place of pilgrimage. One of the highest chapels in the Czech Republic was built here at the end of the nineteenth century.
The original building was made of stone, but the harsh weather conditions on the mountain, which is more than a thousand metres high, were so unfavourable that the stone froze. The chapel was therefore clad in clapboard in the 1920s, so that today it looks as if it were a wooden structure.
The dome above the altar is reminiscent of old Byzantine buildings, and the turret above the entrance offers beautiful views of the Beskydy Mountains, the Hostýnské vrchy and, in good weather, the Slovak mountains – Roháče and Malá Fatra.
Behind the chapel stands a majestic sculpture of Cyril and Methodius. The sculpture was made of bronze by the sculptor Albín Polášek, the author of the stone statue of Radegast, which stands on the mountain ridge and is a popular place for visitors to the nearby Pustevny.
