Jan Sarkander’s fountain in Fulnek

The fountain in the square in Fulnek commemorates St. Jan Sarkander, a Catholic priest who also worked in nearby Příbor. Despite his torture in the Olomouc dungeon in 1620, Sarkander did not reveal what the nobleman Ladislav Popel of Lobkovice had confided to him during his confession.

The fountain is one of the treasures of Baroque art of Fulnek and the whole Moravské Kravařsko region. It dates back to the 1840s and is the only Baroque fountain in the Nový Jičín district. The lower part of the fountain is in the shape of a four-leaf clover and the sculpture consists of a figure of a saint and two angels. The fountain stands in Fulnek because one of the local noblemen, Mr. Skrbenský of Hřišť’, took part in the harsh interrogations of Jan Sarkander in Olomouc. Today, the fountain has been completely renovated and is one of the monuments of Fulnek’s Baroque art that attracts tourists to the town.
