Mariánský sloup in Opava

The jewel of Baroque art stands in front of the Church of St. Vojtěch in Opava and depicts the Virgin Mary on a globe wrapped by a snake.

Like other plague columns, it protected Opava from further plagues. The model for its construction was the column in Vienna’s Am Hof Square.

The current form of the column was completely reconstructed in 1997. During the restoration, restorers found commemorative documents from 1869 and a groschen from 1860. The original document is stored in the Provincial Archives, a copy of it and the groschen have been returned to the building. Documents about the last reconstruction and the current coins were also added as evidence of today’s times for future generations.
