Muzeum Beskyd
Traditional crafts and the way of life of the people living at the foothills of the Beskydy mountains are presented at the exposition in Muzeum Beskyd in Frýdek-Místek.
There are over eight hundred exhibits, including a weaving loom, which was one of the main sources of livelihood in many local cottages in the area. You can take a look inside a traditional Wallachian chamber and learn about sheep breeding, which was inseparable from Wallachia and Lachia. In the section devoted to nature, you will see two hundred animals that live in the Beskydy Mountains, including rare beasts, such as the lynx, wolf and bear. The exhibition is complemented by fossils of extinct mammals and ancient plants.
As the museum is housed in the Frýdek Castle, visitors can extend their tour of the museum exhibits by exploring the castle premises. You can admire the ornate and representative Knights’ Hall with the coats of arms of Silesian nobility, climb the lookout tower and see the cosy Chapel of St. Barbara, which served the nobility for contemplation.
A small exhibition hall in the sacristy of the chapel introduces you to Frýdek-Místek as an important place of pilgrimage. Frýdek was one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Silesia in the eighteenth century, and the ornate and splendid Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where pilgrims used to go, is still a testament to this.
Muzeum Beskyd also manages Hukvaldy Castle, which is one of the largest castle ruins in the Czech Republic.
