Ostrava Puppet Theatre

The Ostrava Puppet Theatre is a theatre scene with a professional ensemble of actors and puppeteers. On weekday mornings it presents performances for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and on Sundays for family audiences. The programme also includes a wide range of creative workshops for schools and the public.

The theatre has a main stage with a domed auditorium, an alternative stage and in the modern annex visitors will find a new theatre hall with a variable auditorium, an amphitheatre or a café with a puppet gallery.

Every autumn, the theatre organises the Spectaculo Interesse international puppet theatre festival, which is the most important festival of its kind in the Czech Republic.

If you walk past the theatre’s alternative stage extension, you may wonder what the point of the colourful cubes “strewn” around is. These dice with numbers are part of a special sundial. The time is determined by the current position of the shadow cast by the so-called nodus (tip of the stick) on the black lines marked in the paved surface. On each of the lines then lies a coloured cube with the time.

Another interesting feature of the theatre is the puppet clock installed in the wall facing Masaryk Square. The beautiful hand-carved figures in this unique astronomical clock will show themselves to you every day from 8 am to 8 pm at an even hour.
