Poruba Wandering Stone

In the Poruba district of Ostrava you will find the second largest wandering boulder in the Czech Republic. It weighs eleven tons and arrived 200 thousand years ago from the area of Sweden, from where it was brought by a glacier.

The Poruba stone was discovered in 1928 in the bed of a local stream. Today it is a natural monument.

In composition and colour it resembles the largest wandering boulder found in the Czech Republic, which lies at the opposite end of the town. North Moravia and Silesia is the region with the largest number of finds of these stones. In Ostrava alone there are almost thirty freely accessible places where people can see the wandering boulder. Other places are in the Bruntál and Osoblažsko regions.
