Statue of the Virgin Mary in Dolní Benešov
The statue, which symbolizes the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, was erected in the market square in Dolní Benešov by the owner of the local estate Johann Henneberk.
This was in the second half of the 18th century and at that time the market square was basically a deserted town centre, so the statue formed a worthy landmark.
Since the 16th century, statues with this theme have abundantly decorated the centres of towns and villages. In art and sculpture, these works were called Immaculata, or imaculata, meaning ‘immaculate’.
