Television tower on Praděd
At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was a lookout tower on the highest mountain in Moravia and Bohemian Silesia.
It resembled a Gothic tower and had an observation deck at a height of 32 metres. It was built of stone from the nearby Tabulové skály rocks. The material used proved to be unsuitable, as the stone crumbled and the tower was no longer safe. Reconstruction was about to begin, but in 1959 the tower collapsed. Instead of reconstruction, a new modern tower was built, which also allowed the television signal to be broadcast.
Construction began in 1968, and a road was built, which is still used to supply the cottage and is now the only access route to the top of the mountain. The transmitter is 146.5 metres high and a lift takes you up to the circular viewing terrace in a few seconds. The top of the transmitter is therefore at 1,637 metres, which is the highest accessible point in the Czech Republic.
The views from here are impressive – in good weather you can see the Beskydy Lysá hora, Radhošť’, Kelčský Javorník and Krkonoše Sněžka. If you are really lucky, you can see the peaks of the High Tatras and even the Alps. There is also a restaurant and a hotel in the transmitter building, thanks to which you can stay as high as you can in the Czech Republic.
