Gabriel’s House in Bruntál
The history of the oldest town in the Czech Republic can also be read from the local square. One of the houses that tells the story of this town is the so-called Gabriel's House. Its origins are probably medieval, but it was given its present appearance around 1600. It dates back to the time of the town's greatest prosperity, when the Lords of Vrbno ruled.
The house stands in the corner of the square and is one of the most beautiful townhouses in Silesia. In spite of modifications in the 18th and 19th centuries, it has retained its original character, including the stepped gable, which was typical of the Silesian Renaissance. The false arcades and bars in the windows are also original. Originally a townhouse, it was a municipal museum in the 1950s.
History buffs can take a visit to Gabriel’s House as a small appetizer before visiting the local castle with its excellent exhibition dedicated to the history of the town.
