Protected Conservation Area in Havířov

The centre of the town of Havířov is a conservation zone, which protects a unique set of residential houses that were built in the 1950s.

At that time, the whole of Havířov was created and architects were given the task of creating a modern city of the future. Because they wanted to define themselves against bourgeois pre-war architecture, they took inspiration from the Czech Renaissance.

The residential buildings are decorated with turrets and various ornaments and figures appear on the facades. The streets are wide and resemble boulevards. Even the apartments themselves are generously designed and still provide pleasant and modern living. The architectural style is called socialist realism, or “sorela” for short, and visitors to the Moravian-Silesian Region can also see it in the Ostrava housing estate Poruba, which was built at the same time as Havířov.
