Protected heritage zone in Haviřov

The centre of Havířov is a conservation area that protects a unique set of residential houses that were built in the 50s of the 20th century. At that time, Haviřov was created as a whole and architects were tasked with creating a modern city of the future. They wanted to define anti-bourgeois, pre-war architecture and they were therefore inspired by the Czech renaissance.

Residential houses are adorned with turrets and facades featuring various ornaments and figures. The streets are wide and are more like boulevards. Even the flats are generously designed and still provide a comfortable and modern living. The architectural style is called socialist realism, that is abbreviated to “Sorel” and visitors to the Moravian-Silesian region can also see it well in the Ostrava suburb of Poruba which originated at the same time as Haviřov.
