Church of St. Martin in Tošovice
At first glance, the Church of St. Martin in Tošovice near Odry is different from the churches that were built at the beginning of the twentieth century. How could it not be, for it shows the handiwork of the architect Leopold Bauer, who was characterised by designing buildings that were out of the ordinary.
The native of Krnov is responsible for many important buildings in Moravia and especially in Silesia. His style was characterised by returning to building styles and combining them in various ways. The church in Tošovice is dominated by a massive tower, to which small side towers are literally glued. On closer examination, one cannot help but think that Bauer used some of the elements in the construction of Priessnitz’s medical house in Jeseník, one of the architect’s masterpieces.
Originally there was a wooden church from the sixteenth century in Tošovice, but it was in such a desperate state that it had to be demolished. The construction of a new church began in 1914 and after two years the faithful saw a new church.
