Karlovice Scythe Maker’s House
In Karlovice, in a historic building that has preserved the beauty and style of the original rural architecture, there is a " scythe workshop ", i.e. a factory of village and forestry tools. This unique building is a national cultural monument.
Iron was worked in the area around Karlovice as early as the 16th century, when there were ‘hamry’, i.e. water-powered forges. Production ceased during the Thirty Years’ War and was only restored in the 18th century by Prince Charles of Liechtenstein of Krnov. The ‘hamry’ operated until the middle of the 19th century, when it could not compete with the ironworks in Ostrava.
Towards the end of the 19th century the building was converted into a dwelling, the scythe workshop became a pipe factory and later a sawmill.
This history is brought to life in the Scythe Maker’s House, where, among other things, you can learn about life and work in the forests. You can also see the giant saws that were used by workers in the forests of Jeseníky. The main buildings of the Scythe Maker’s House are complemented by the barn, which contains examples of various rural machines, from threshers and mills to scythes and rakes.
