Šipka Cave near Štramberk
The cave is located on a hill above the town and offers beautiful views of the picturesque town of Štramberk, nicknamed the Moravian Bethlehem.
It is the place where the oldest human settlement on our territory is documented. In 1880, part of the lower jaw of a Neanderthal child was found here. The discovery is all the more valuable because it is a quarter of a century older than similar finds in Neanderthal, Germany.
Remains of prehistoric animals, such as a cave bear or even a prehistoric lion, have also been found in Šipka. Šipka is thus the most valuable prehistoric archaeological site in the Czech Republic. The discoveries here probably inspired Zdeněk Burian, a native of neighbouring Kopřivnice, to his famous drawings and paintings, which he used to create reconstructions of scenes from prehistoric times. Burian is said to have come to play at Šipka as a child.
The cave is freely accessible and consists of a large space excavated by water in the hillside.
