Dlouhé Stráně Hydroelectric Power Plant

The Dlouhé Stráně pumping hydropower plant is not only Czech, but in many respects also a world phenomenon. It is actually a huge water reservoir created by cutting off the top of the Mravenečník mountain massif.

The principle of the power plant is simple: at peak times, water from the upper reservoir falls into the lower reservoir, turns a turbine and produces electricity. At night, when power is cheaper, pumps push the water back into the huge reservoir.

The power station is open to the public and visitors can access the underground areas where the technology for generating electricity is located. They will learn all about the origins of this unique structure, which has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Czech Republic. The road that leads to the upper reservoir is one of the most challenging routes for cyclists and was specially made of high quality asphalt from Albania, which can withstand the harsh weather conditions of the local area. The Dlouhé Stráně power plant is a dominant feature of the landscape, it can be seen from many peaks of the Jeseníky Mountains and the horizontal line is right in front of the eyes of tourists who follow one of the most famous routes between Červenohorské sedlo and Švýcarna.
