Vendryně Lime Kilns

Lime kilns or also "wopieky" were built in Vendryně near Třinec at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, two of the kilns have been repaired and are used to learn about the history of the area and to provide recreation for visitors. One is made of stone and the other, more recent, is made of brick.

The lime kilns were built at Vendryně to provide a place to burn lime from the limestone that was mined in the area. The lime was used in blast furnaces to extract iron from iron ore. The iron ore that was mined in the area was of poor quality, so it ceased to be used for iron production and the lime kilns lost their purpose.
