Botanická zahrada Štramberk
An old limestone quarry near the town of Štramberk became the place where a botanical garden and arboretum were established at the end of the 20th century.
Thanks to the arboretum, a rare butterfly that had become extinct due to environmental pollution returned to Štramberk and was artificially planted there. Today, Štramberk is the only place in the Czech Republic where this butterfly, the Apollo butterfly, lives. Rare species of flowers, including orchids and carnivorous plants, grow in the botanical garden.
Recently, a cave was discovered here, which speleologists are still exploring. So far, they have reached a depth of 53 metres. In some places, the fossilised remains of plants and animals can be seen. The rocks of the former quarry are accessible to climbers, who can use them with the agreement of the owner of the site. You can also walk through the stone labyrinth, which is reminiscent of the Mediterranean area.
