Bartošovice Chateau Park

The romantic chateau in Bartošovice is surrounded by an equally picturesque chateau park with many important trees.

A unique feature is the local plane tree, which is considered to be the oldest and most massive plane tree in the Czech Republic and one of the oldest trees in the country.

This tree was planted in 1833 by the scholar Professor Josef Meinert to show his great love for his partner, the local Countess Josefina of Canal. They spent twenty years together at the chateau in Bartošovice, and when the Countess died, Josef Meinert had a tree as rare and unusual as the Countess of Canal planted under the windows of the chateau – a plane tree brought from England.

Today the tree is 36 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of almost eight metres, making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The plane tree is now called Josephine’s plane tree and the love of Countess Josephine and Josef Meinert is commemorated by a tomb at the nearby church. The chateau garden is part of the Chateau Educational Trail, which passes through Bartošovice and presents the history of the area on ten information boards.
